Focusing on what seems important can mean missing what really is important.

The Gorilla in the Midst
In a demonstration that has now been repeated hundreds of times, experimenters asked groups of people to observe a videotape and count how many times a basketball is passed among a group of students. While the students are passing the ball a person in a gorilla costume walks slowly among them, stops, turns to the camera, thumps his chest, and then walks on. The vast majority of observers don't notice the gorilla, because they are so fixated on counting the passes.
It’s probably wise to ask two questions regularly: What are we not seeing that could make a difference? And, what are we seeing that’s only part of a larger, more important, or more useful way of understanding what’s going on?

The Map of California
Early map-makers showed California as an island, separated from the mainland by “the Mediterranean Sea of California.” Even after correct information came in, the maps weren’t made right for a long time.
Mistaking fantasy for fact and refusing to incorporate the truth into their “maps” can be harmful for individuals and organizations.

The Saltshaker
When one of the world's leading experts on relationships was asked to describe what he had learned from more than thirty years of studying them, he answered, "It sounds simple, but in fact you could capture all of my research findings with the metaphor of a saltshaker. Instead of filling it with salt, fill it with all the ways you can say yes, and that is what a good relationship is... In contrast, in a partnership that's troubled, the saltshaker is filled with all the ways you can say no."
What's the ratio between saying yes and saying no in your organization?
